What’s the secret to having difficult conversations?
Yesterday during a team session I saw the CEO of a large organisation have a difficult conversation with a team member twice.
On the first occasion she was angry, blaming and critical and the result was the conversation was shut down. Later she addressed the same topic differently and rich dialogue resulted.
It strikes me that at the heart of my work with teams is typically this issue. How do we broach difficult conversations constructively?
And in doing so how do we better engage with and leverage difference within a team – of opinion, style and experience – to improve team performance?
There is a real art to this.
For an explanation of what I consider to be the key ingredients of having difficult conversations and leveraging difference, please take a look at today’s Vlog.
Have a great week everybody.
